Ralph Alson Sams
Mr. Sams, age 91 of Pineville, NC, went home to be with the Lord Friday, August 14, 2009, at his residence. A service to celebrate
his life will be at 2:00PM Monday in the Chapel at Calvary Church, Pastor Phil Divine, Reverends Bruce League, and Lee Davis
officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Elmwood City Cemetery.
Mr. Sams was born on August 12, 1918, to Russell Alson and Maude Campbell Sams and was a lifelong resident of Mecklenburg
County in Charlotte. Ralph was educated in Charlotte Schools and graduated from Oakhurst High School in Charlotte. On March
28, 1952, he married Margaret Steed Sams. He worked at the Southern Bakery on South Tryon Street before joining the Army Air
Force during World War II. When he returned and was honorably discharged, he went to work at 'The Coffee Cup' on North
Clarkson Street as the chief grill master. After leaving the Coffee Cup he went to work for Charles Reid at Park 'n' Shop on
Wilkinson Blvd. where he served as Manager. He also worked at all four of the Park 'n' Shop stores during his 21 years there. He
then went to work for Ken Wherry's Deluxe Auto Center and worked there for 31 years until his retirement when he was 83 years
old. He served as Deacon, Elder and Treasurer for many years in his church and also served on the Board of Directors of Hebron
Colony and Grace Home Ministries for years, before his health would not let him climb the Boone mountains any longer for
meetings. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Steed Sams and his son Barry Ralph Sams. He was preceded in death
by his son Richard Alson Sams and a niece Lynn Pruette Davis who he helped to raise and was a special joy in his life as well as
her son, Aaron Houston Davis of of Lumberton, MS. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Collin Steed and his wife, Loraine G.
Steed and many nieces and nephews whom he loved very much. Ralph is a member of Calvary Church. Pallbearers will be John
Pruette, Roger D. Steed, Billy Steed, Cliff Currie, Rev. Rodney Cripps and Rev. Steve All. Memorials may be made to Hebron
